54Then seizing him they brought him into the house of the high priest. Peter was following at a distance.55Then after lighting a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sitting down together, Peter sat in the midst of them.56Then seeing him, a certain maidservant sitting by the light, and gazing at him, said, "This one also was with him."57But he denied, saying, "I do not know him, woman."58And after a little while another, seeing him, asserted, "You also are one of them." But Peter asserted, "Man, I am not."59And after about one hour had passed, another one was insisting, saying, "Truly this one also was with him, for he is a Galilean."60But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are saying." And instantly, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.61And turning, the Lord looked at Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before a rooster crows today, you will deny me three times."62And going outside, he wept bitterly.
