1David had grown old and had reached the full number of his days, so he caused Solomon his son to reign over Israel.2He assembled all the leaders of Israel together with the priests and the Levites.3The Levites from thirty years of age and upward were registered, and the total count of their heads among the men came to thirty-eight thousand.4Of these, twenty-four thousand were assigned to supervise the work of the house of the LORD, and six thousand served as officials and judges.5Four thousand served as gatekeepers, and four thousand were appointed to praise the LORD with the articles that had been made for that praise.6David organized the Levites into divisions according to the sons of Levi: Gershom, Kohath, and Merari.
