Jehoshaphat Strengthens Judah and Reforms Justice

Chapter 17
1 Jehoshaphat his son became king in his place, and he strengthened himself against Israel. 2 He placed forces in all the fortified cities of Judah and placed governors in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim that Asa his father had captured. 3 And the LORD was with Jehoshaphat because he walked in the first ways of David his father and did not seek the Baals. 4 He inquired of the God of his father, and he walked in his commandments and not according to the deeds of Israel. 5 And the LORD established the kingdom in his hand, and they gave all Judah an offering to Jehoshaphat, and there was to him riches and glory in abundance. 6 His heart was exalted in the ways of the LORD. Furthermore, he removed the high places and the Asherim from Judah. 7 In the third year of his kingdom, he sent his rulers—to the son of Power, to Obadiah, to Zechariah, to Nathanael, and to Micaiah—to teach in the cities of Judah. 8 And with them the Levites: Shemaiah and Nethaniah and Zebadiah and Asahel and Shemiramoth and Jonathan and Adonijah and Tobijah and good Adonijah the Levites, and with them Elishama and Jehoram, the priests. 9 They taught in Judah, and with them was the book of the law of the LORD. They went around to all the cities of Judah and taught the people. 10 And the fear of the LORD was upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were around Judah, and they did not fight with Jehoshaphat. 11 The Philistines brought Jehoshaphat an offering and silver as tribute. The Arabians brought him sheep, 7,000 rams and 700 goats, 7,000 goats and 700 rams. 12 And Jehoshaphat went and became great until witness-ascent, and he built in Judah fortresses and cities of refuge. 13 And he had much work for himself in the cities of Judah, and men of warfare, mighty ones of power, in Jerusalem. 14 These were their numbers by their fathers' houses for Judah: the captain of thousands, Adnah, and with him mighty men of valor, 300,000. 15 Jehochanan the chief was under him, and with him two hundred and eighty thousand. 16 Amasiah son of Zichri, the one volunteering to the LORD, was at his side, and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of valor. 17 From Benjamin: Eliada, a mighty man of strength, and with him 200,000 men armed with bow and shield. 18 And over his hand Jehozabad, and with him a hundred and eighty thousand ready for holy war of the host. 19 These are the ones serving the king apart from those whom the king gave in the cities of the fortified city throughout Judah.
