- And on the fourteenth day of the month Adar they made it a day of feasting and gladness, a good day, and a day for sending portions to one another.
- And Mordecai recorded these matters and sent letters to all the Jews—near and far—that they should celebrate these two days every year, as the days on which the Jews obtained relief from their enemies, and as the month which had been changed for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday.
Now in the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, on the thirteenth day—when the king's command and his edict were to be carried out—on that day the Jews assembled in their cities throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus to lay hold of those who sought their harm; and no one could withstand them, for the fear of them had fallen upon all the peoples. And the Jews gathered together in Shushan the citadel and laid hands on those who sought their harm; and they slew five hundred men in Shushan, and they also slew the ten sons of Haman; but they did not take any plunder.
In the other provinces of the king the Jews slew and destroyed seventy‑five thousand of those who hated them; but they did not take plunder.
On the fourteenth day of the month Adar the Jews rested and made it a day of feasting and of gladness. But the Jews who were in Shushan assembled themselves on the thirteenth day and on the fourteenth day; and on the fifteenth day they rested and made it a day of feasting and of gladness. And the remainder of the Jews who were in Shushan assembled themselves on the thirteenth day and slew three hundred men in Shushan; and on the fourteenth they rested and made it a day of feasting and gladness.
Therefore the Jews of the villages, who dwell in the unwalled towns, make the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting and a good day, and of sending portions one to another. And the Jews of Shushan confirmed the fourteenth and the fifteenth days as a time of feasting and gladness. And Mordecai wrote these matters down and sent letters to all the Jews—near and far—throughout the one hundred and twenty‑seven provinces of the king:
that these days should be remembered and kept in every generation, in every family, in every province, and in every city; that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor the memory of them perish from their offspring.
That these days should be observed at the appointed times, as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had established them, and as they had decreed for themselves and for their descendants.
The decree of these matters was recorded in writing, and letters were sent by courier into all the king's provinces to confirm them. So the Jews undertook to do as they had begun, and as Mordecai had written to them, and as they had agreed with Esther the queen. Thus these days were established and made a statute for Israel, and for their descendants, to be observed at the appointed times, as days of feasting and gladness and of sending portions to one another.
The number of those slain in Shushan the citadel was five hundred, besides the ten sons of Haman. And in the provinces of the king the number of those slain was seventy‑five thousand; and the spoil they did not take. And the Jews who were in Shushan assembled on the thirteenth and fourteenth days, and on the fifteenth they rested and made it a day of feasting and of gladness; and there was great joy among the Jews, light and honor.
