The Jews Defend Themselves and Prevail in Susa

Esther 9:1-17

Chapter 9
1 And in the twelfth month—that is, the month Adar—on the thirteenth day of it, on which the word of the king and his decree arrived to be done, on the day when the enemies of the Jews had expected to rule over them, it was turned around: the Jews ruled over their haters. 2 The Jews assembled in their cities throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus to lay hands on those seeking their harm, and no one stood before them, for the dread of them had fallen upon all the peoples. 3 And all the princes of the provinces, the satraps, the governors, and the king's officials were supporting the Jews, for the fear of Mordecai had fallen upon them. 4 For Mordecai was great in the king's house, and his fame was spreading through all the provinces. The man Mordecai was becoming greater and greater. 5 And the Jews struck all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, killing and destruction, and they did to their haters as they willed. 6 And in Susa the citadel the Jews killed and destroyed five hundred men. 7 and Parshandatha and Dalphon and Aspatha 8 and Poratha, Adalia, and Aridatha. 9 and Parshandatha, Arisai, Aridai, and Vaizatha. 10 The ten sons of Haman son of Hammedatha, the opponent of the Judahites, they killed, but they did not send their hand into the spoil. 11 On that day the number of those killed in Susa the capital came before the king. 12 And the king said to Esther the queen, "In Susa the capital the Jews killed and destroyed five hundred men and the ten sons of Haman. In the rest of the king's provinces, what did they do? And what did you ask, and it will be given to you? And what did you seek further, and it will be done." 13 And Esther said, "If it is good to the king, let the Jews who are in Susa be given permission also tomorrow to do according to the law of the day, and let the ten sons of Haman be hanged upon the wood." 14 And the king said for it to be done so, and a law was given in Shushan, and they hanged the ten sons of Haman. 15 And the Jews who were in Susa assembled also on the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and they killed three hundred men in Susa, and they did not lay hands on the spoil. 16 And the rest of the Jews who were in the king's provinces gathered together and stood for their lives and rested from their enemies. They killed seventy-five thousand of their haters, but they did not lay hands on the plunder. 17 On the thirteenth day of the month Adar they rested on the fourteenth of it and made it a day of feasting and joy.
