Chapter 23
In the seventh year Jehoiada strengthened himself and took the commanders of hundreds—Azariah son of Jeroham, Ishmael son of Johanan, Azariah son of Obed, Maaseiah son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son of Zichri—with him into the covenant.
They went about in Judah and gathered the Levites from all the cities of Judah and the heads of the fathers of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem.
All the assembly cut a covenant with the king in the house of God, and Jehoiada said to them, 'Behold, the son of the king shall reign, just as the LORD spoke concerning the sons of David.'
This is the thing that you shall do: one third of you who come on the Sabbath shall be for the priests and for the Levites, for the gatekeepers of the thresholds,
one third shall be in the house of the king, and one third at the gate of the foundation; and all the people shall be in the courts of the house of the LORD.
Let no one come into the house of the LORD except the priests and the ministering Levites; they shall come in, because they are holy, and all the people shall keep the charge of the LORD.
The Levites shall surround the king, each man with his weapon in his hand; and anyone who comes into the house shall be put to death. Be with the king when he comes in and when he goes out.
The Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded; each took his men, those coming on the Sabbath with those going out on the Sabbath, for Jehoiada the priest had not dismissed the divisions.
Jehoiada the priest gave to the commanders of hundreds the spears and the shields and the bucklers that had belonged to King David, which were in the house of God.
He stationed all the people, each with his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the house to the left side of the house, around the altar and the house, surrounding the king.
They brought out the son of the king and put the crown and the testimony upon him, and they made him king and anointed him; Jehoiada and his sons said, 'Let the king live!'
Athaliah heard the sound of the people running and acclaiming the king, and she came to the people at the house of the LORD.
She looked, and behold, the king was standing by his pillar at the entrance, with the commanders and the trumpeters beside the king, and all the people of the land rejoicing and blowing trumpets, and the singers with instruments of song and those declaring praise; Athaliah tore her garments and said, 'Conspiracy! Conspiracy!'
Jehoiada the priest brought out the commanders of hundreds who were appointed over the force and said to them, 'Bring her out between the ranks, and let anyone who follows her be put to death by the sword.' For the priest had said, 'Do not put her to death in the house of the LORD.'
They laid hands on her, and she came to the entrance of the Horse Gate of the king's house, and they put her to death there.
Jehoiada cut a covenant between himself and all the people and the king, that they should be a people for the LORD.
All the people came to the house of Baal and tore it down; they broke its altars and its images, and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars.
Jehoiada placed the oversight of the house of the LORD in the hand of the priests and the Levites whom David had divided for the house of the LORD, to offer the burnt offerings of the LORD as written in the law of Moses, with joy and with song according to the direction of David.
The gatekeepers were stationed at the gates of the house of the LORD so that no unclean person might enter for any matter.
He took the commanders of hundreds and the nobles and the rulers over the people and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the LORD; they came through the upper gate into the king's house and seated the king upon the throne of the kingdom.
All the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet; they had put Athaliah to death by the sword.
