In the seventh year Jehoiada strengthened himself and took the captains of hundreds—Azariah son of Jeroham, and Ishmael son of Jehohanan, and Azariah son of Obed, and Maaseiah son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son of Zechariah—and made a covenant with them.
They went through Judah and gathered the Levites from all the cities of Judah and the heads of the fathers' houses of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem. And all the assembly made a covenant in the house of God with the king, saying, “Behold, the king's son shall reign, as the LORD has spoken concerning the sons of David.”
This is what you shall do: one third of you who come on the Sabbath shall be officers for the priests and for the Levites at the gates.
One third shall be in the king's house, and one third at the foundation gate, and all the people shall be in the courtyards of the house of the LORD.
Let no one enter the house of the LORD except the priests and those ministers of the Levites; for they are holy; and let all the people keep the watch of the LORD. And the Levites shall surround the king, every man with his weapons in his hand; and whoever enters shall be killed. They shall be with the king when he goes out and when he comes in. So the Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded; and each man took his men from the divisions—those who were to come on the Sabbath with those who went out on the Sabbath; for Jehoiada the priest did not dismiss the divisions. And Jehoiada the priest gave to the captains the spears, the shields, and the bucklers that belonged to King David and were in the house of God.
He set all the people, each man with his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the house to the left side of the house, by the altar and by the king, all around.
Then they brought out the king's son and put the crown and the testimony upon him; and they made him king and anointed him. Jehoiada and his sons cried, “Long live the king!”
When Athaliah heard the sound of the people running and praising the king, she came to the people into the house of the LORD.
She looked, and behold, the king stood on the pillar at the entrance, and the captains and the trumpets were by the king; and all the people of the land rejoiced and blew with the trumpets, and the singers with musical instruments made a sound of joy. Then Athaliah tore her clothes and cried, “Conspiracy! Conspiracy!”
Then Jehoiada the priest sent out the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the army, who said to her, “Bring her out from the house.” And whoever followed her, let him be put to death with the sword; for the priest said, “Do not put her to death in the house of the LORD.” So they laid hands on her, and she went by the way of the entrance of the horses into the king's house; and there they put her to death. And Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people, that they might be the LORD's people; and the king should be the LORD's.
All the people went to the house of Baal; and they tore it down, and broke down its altars and its images, and killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars.
Jehoiada appointed the oversight of the house of the LORD to the priests, the Levites, whom David had assigned over the house of the LORD to offer the burnt offerings of the LORD, as it is written in the Law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, by the direction of David.
He stationed the gatekeepers at the gates of the house of the LORD, so that no unclean person should enter. And he took the captains of the hundreds, and the nobles, and the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought down the king from the house of the LORD; they came by the upper gate of the king's house and set the king on the royal throne.
Then all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet; for they had slain Athaliah with the sword.
