Chapter 2
24
Rise up, set out, and cross the Arnon. See, I have given into your hand Sihon king of Heshbon, the Amorite, and his land. Begin to possess it and provoke him to war.
25
This day I begin to put your fear and your awe upon the faces of the peoples under all the heavens, who hear the report of you and tremble and are in dread before you.
26
And I sent messengers from the Wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying:
27
I will pass through your land on the way. On the way I will go. I will not turn aside to the right or left.
28
You will sell me food for silver, and I will eat, and you will give me water for silver, and I will drink. Only let me pass through on foot.
29
as the sons of Esau who dwell in Seir and the Moabites who dwell in Er did for me, until I cross the Jordan into the land that the LORD our God has given us.
30
And Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing to let us pass through his territory, for the LORD your God had hardened his spirit and strengthened his heart in order to give him into your hand as on this day.
31
And the LORD said to me, "See, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before you. Begin to possess his land."
32
And Sihon went out to meet us—he and all his people—for warfare at Jahaz.
33
And the LORD our God gave him into our hands, and we struck him and his sons and all his people.
34
And we captured all of its cities at that time, and we devoted to destruction every city—its women and little ones. We left no survivor.
35
Only the livestock we plundered for ourselves, and the spoil of the cities that we captured.
36
Aroer, which is on the edge of the Arnon Valley, and the city that is in the valley, as far as Gilead—there was no city that held itself too high against us; the LORD our God gave all of it into our hands.
37
only you did not approach the land of the sons of Ammon, all along the wadi Jabbok and the cities of the hill country and all that the LORD our God commanded.
