24Rise, set out, and cross the Arnon torrent. See, I have given into your hand Sihon king of Heshbon, the Amorite, and his land. Begin to possess and stir up battle against him.25This day I begin to give your dread and your fear upon the faces of the peoples under all the heavens, so that they will hear your report and tremble and writhe from your face.26So I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with terms of peace, saying:27Let me pass through your land by the road; I will travel only by the road and will not turn aside to the right or to the left.28You shall buy grain for me with silver so that I may eat, and you shall give me water with silver so that I may drink; only let me pass through on my feet.29Just as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I cross the Jordan into the land that the LORD our God is giving us.30But Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing to let us pass through him, for the LORD your God had hardened his spirit and strengthened his heart in order to give him into your hand this day.31The LORD said to me, See, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before you. Begin to possess so that you may possess his land.32Then Sihon came out to meet us, he and all his people, for battle at Jahaz.33The LORD our God gave him into our hands, and we struck him, his sons, and all his people.34And we captured all his cities at that time, and we devoted every city—the men, the women, and the children—leaving no survivor.35We took only the livestock as plunder for ourselves, along with the spoil from the cities we had captured.36From Aroer, which is upon the lip of the Arnon torrent, and the city that is in the torrent, and as far as the Gilead, there was no town that was too high for us; the LORD our God gave all before us.37Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not draw near: any part of the Jabbok torrent, the cities of the mountain, or anything that the LORD our God had commanded.
