The Philistines Reject David

29
Chapter 29
1 The Philistines gathered all their camps at Aphek, and Israel was encamping at the spring that is in Jezreel. 2 The lords of the Philistines are passing by in hundreds and in thousands, and David and his men are passing in the rear with Achish. 3 The lords of the Philistines said, "What are these Hebrews?" And Achish said to the lords of the Philistines, "Is not this David, the servant of Saul, king of Israel, who has been with me these days or these years, and I have not found anything in him from the day of his falling until this day?" 4 The rulers of the Philistines were angry with him, and they said to him, “Rulers of the Philistines: Return the man and let him sit in his place which you appointed him there, and let him not go down with us in warfare and let him not be to us an adversary in warfare. And with what will this one find favor with his lords? Is it not at the head of those men?” 5 Is it not this David whom they taunt in their reproaches, saying, "Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his myriads"? 6 Achish called to David and said to him, "As the LORD lives, you are upright and good in my eyes, your going out and your coming in with me in the camp, for I have not found evil in you from the day of your coming to me until this day. But in the eyes of the lords you are not good." 7 Now return and go in peace, and do not do evil in the eyes of the lords of the Philistines. 8 And David said to Achish, "What have I done? What have you found in your servant from the day I was before you until this day, that I should not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?" 9 And Achish answered and said to David, "I know that you are good in my eyes like an angel of God. However, the chiefs of the Philistines have said, 'He shall not go up with us in the war.'" 10 And now rise early in the morning with the servants of your lord who came with you. And you shall rise early in the morning, and I will give light to you and go. 11 And David arose early, he and his men, to go in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
