1During that night the king's sleep fled, and he commanded that the scroll of the memorial records of the days be brought, and they were read before the king.2It was found written that Mordecai had reported concerning Bigthan and Teresh, the two eunuchs of the king who guarded the threshold, who had sought to lay a hand on King Ahasuerus.3The king asked, "What honor and greatness has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?" The king's attendants answered, "Nothing has been done for him."4The king inquired, "Who is in the court?" Meanwhile Haman had entered the outer court of the palace to request that Mordecai be hanged on the tree he had prepared for him.5The king's attendants told him, "Haman is standing in the court." The king said, "Let him enter."6Haman entered, and the king asked him, "What should be done for the man whom the king wishes to honor?" Haman thought to himself, "Whom would the king delight to honor more than me?"7Haman replied to the king, "The man whom the king wishes to honor."8Let royal garments that the king has worn be brought, together with the horse the king has ridden and the royal crown placed on its head.9Let one of the king's noble officials place the garments and the horse in the man's charge; let the man whom the king wishes to honor be clothed with them and led on the horse through the city square while it is proclaimed before him, "This is what is done for the man whom the king wishes to honor."10The king then instructed Haman, "Go quickly; take the garments and the horse and do exactly as you have said for Mordecai the Jew who sits at the king's gate; omit nothing of what you have spoken."11So Haman took the garments and the horse, clothed Mordecai, led him on horseback through the city square, and proclaimed before him, "This is what is done for the man whom the king wishes to honor."12Mordecai returned to the king's gate while Haman hurried home in mourning with his head covered.13Haman recounted to his wife Zeresh and to all his friends everything that had happened to him. His advisers and Zeresh his wife said to him, "Since Mordecai belongs to the Jewish people before whom you have already begun to fall, you will not prevail against him; you will surely fall before him."14While they were still speaking with him, the king's eunuchs arrived and hurried Haman away to the banquet Esther had prepared.
