Consecration of the Firstborn

Exodus 13:1-16
1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2Consecrate to me every firstborn that opens every womb among the sons of Israel, both among man and among animal; it belongs to me. 3And Moses said to the people, "Remember this day on which you came out of Egypt, out of the house of servants, because the LORD brought you out of it by strength of hand; and no leaven shall be eaten." 4You are coming out on this day, in the month of Abib. 5And when the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, which he swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, you shall perform this service in this month. 6Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the LORD. 7Unleavened bread shall be eaten for seven days, and no leaven shall be seen by you, nor shall any leaven be seen by you in all your border. 8And you shall tell your son on that day, saying, "It is because of this that the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt." 9And it shall be for a sign on your hand and for a memorial between your eyes, so that the instruction of the LORD may be in your mouth, because the LORD brought you out of Egypt by a strong hand. 10You shall keep this statute at its appointed time from year to year. 11And when the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanite, just as he swore to you and to your fathers, and gives it to you, 12You shall set apart to the LORD every firstborn that opens the womb, and every firstborn offspring of an animal that belongs to you; the males shall belong to the LORD. 13Every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a sheep, but if you do not redeem it, you shall break its neck; and every firstborn among your sons you shall redeem. 14And when your son asks you tomorrow, saying, "What is this?" you shall say to him, "The LORD brought us out of Egypt, out of the house of servants, by strength of hand." 15And it happened when Pharaoh hardened himself against sending us, the LORD killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of man to the firstborn of animal; therefore I sacrifice to the LORD every male that opens the womb, and every firstborn of my sons I redeem. 16And it shall be for a sign on your hand and for phylacteries between your eyes, because the LORD brought us out of Egypt by strength of hand.
