False Prophets and Idolatry

Deuteronomy 13:1-18
1If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, 2and the sign or the wonder that he spoke to you comes to pass, saying, 'Let us go after other gods that you have not known and let us serve them,' 3you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or to that dreamer of the dream, for the LORD your God is testing you to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 4You shall walk after the LORD your God, fear him, keep his commandments, listen to his voice, serve him, and hold fast to him. 5That prophet or that dreamer of the dream shall be put to death, because he has spoken revolt against the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slaves, to turn you aside from the way that the LORD your God commanded you to walk; so you shall burn the evil from your midst. 6If your brother the son of your mother, or your son or your daughter or the wife of your bosom or your neighbor who is as your own soul, secretly entices you, saying, 'Let us go and serve other gods that neither you nor your fathers have known,' 7gods of the peoples around you, whether near to you or far from you, from one end of the land to the other, 8you shall not consent to him or listen to him; your eye shall not pity him, nor shall you spare or conceal him. 9You shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and the hand of all the people afterward. 10You shall stone him to death with stones, because he sought to turn you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slaves. 11Then all Israel will hear and be afraid and will not again do such an evil thing among you. 12If you hear it said in one of your cities that the LORD your God is giving you to dwell in, 13that worthless men have gone out from among you and have led the inhabitants of their city astray, saying, 'Let us go and serve other gods that you have not known,' 14then you shall seek and search and ask carefully; and if the matter is true and established that this abomination has been done among you, 15you shall strike the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword; you shall devote it and all that is in it, and its livestock, with the edge of the sword. 16You shall gather all its spoil into the midst of its square and burn the city and all its spoil with fire as a whole offering to the LORD your God; and it shall be a mound forever; it shall not be built again. 17Nothing of the devoted thing shall cling to your hand, so that the LORD may turn from the burning of his anger and give you compassion and have compassion on you and multiply you, as he swore to your fathers, 18when you obey the voice of the LORD your God by keeping all his commandments that I command you today, doing what is right in the eyes of the LORD your God.
