The Place of Worship

Deuteronomy 12:1-32
1These are the statutes and the judgments that you shall keep by doing them in the land that the LORD your God gave to your fathers to possess, all the days that you live on the land. 2You shall surely destroy all the places where the nations that you are dispossessing served their gods, on the high mountains and on the hills and under every luxuriant tree. 3You shall tear down their altars, break their pillars, and burn their Asherah with fire; you shall cut down the idols of their gods and destroy their name from that place. 4You shall not do so to the LORD your God. 5Instead, you shall seek only the place that the LORD your God will choose from all your tribes to put his name there for his dwelling, and you shall go there. 6You shall bring there your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the contribution of your hand, your vows and your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your cattle and of your flock. 7You shall eat there before the LORD your God and rejoice in all the sending of your hand, you and your households whom the LORD your God has blessed. 8You shall not do as we are doing here today, each person doing whatever is right in his own eyes. 9For you have not yet come to the resting place and to the inheritance that the LORD your God is giving you. 10You shall cross the Jordan and settle in the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance; he will give you rest from all your enemies around you, and you will live in security. 11Then the place that the LORD your God will choose to make his name dwell there is where you shall bring everything that I command you: your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the contribution of your hand, and every choice offering from your vows that you vow to the LORD. 12You shall rejoice before the LORD your God, you and your sons and your daughters and your male and female servants and the Levite who is within your gates, because he has no portion or inheritance with you. 13Be careful not to offer your burnt offerings in any place that you see. 14You shall offer your burnt offerings only in the place that the LORD will choose in one of your tribes; there you shall do everything that I command you. 15Whenever you desire, you may sacrifice and eat meat according to the blessing that the LORD your God has given you in all your gates; both the unclean and the clean may eat it, just as the gazelle and the deer. 16You must not eat the blood; you shall pour it out on the ground like water. 17You are not permitted to eat within your gates the tithe of your grain, your new wine, or your oil, or the firstborn of your cattle or of your flock, or any of your vowed offerings, freewill offerings, or contributions of your hand. 18You shall eat them before the LORD your God in the place that the LORD your God will choose, you and your son and your daughter and your male and female servants and the Levite who is within your gates, and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God in all the sending of your hand. 19Be careful not to neglect the Levite as long as you live on your land. 20When the LORD your God enlarges your border as he has spoken to you, and you say, I will eat meat because your soul desires to eat meat, you may eat meat in all the desire of your soul. 21If the place that the LORD your God chooses to put his name is too far from you, then you shall sacrifice from your cattle or from your flock that the LORD has given you, as I have commanded you, and you shall eat it in your gates in all the desire of your soul. 22Just as the gazelle and the deer are eaten, so you shall eat it; the unclean and the clean together may eat it. 23Only be strong not to eat the blood, because the blood is the soul, and you must not eat the soul with the flesh. 24You shall not eat it; you shall pour it out on the ground like water. 25You shall not eat it, so that it may go well with you and with your children after you, because you will be doing what is right in the eyes of the LORD. 26Only your holy things that belong to you and your vowed offerings you shall carry and bring to the place that the LORD will choose. 27You shall present your burnt offerings, both the meat and the blood, on the altar of the LORD your God, and the blood of your sacrifices shall be poured out on the altar of the LORD your God, and you shall eat the meat. 28Keep and hear all these words that I command you, so that it may go well with you and with your sons after you forever, because you will be doing what is good and right in the eyes of the LORD your God. 29For the LORD your God will cut off the nations that you are entering to dispossess from before you; you shall dispossess them and dwell in their land. 30Be careful that you are not ensnared by following them after they have been destroyed from before you, and that you do not inquire about their gods, saying, "How did these nations serve their gods? I will do the same." 31You shall not do so to the LORD your God, because they have done for their gods every abomination that the LORD hates; they have even burned their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods. 32Everything that I command you, you shall keep and do; you shall not add anything to it or take anything away from it.
