Deuteronomy

Love, Obey, Choose

Chapter 11
1 You shall love the LORD your God, and you shall keep his charge, his statutes, his judgments, and his commandments all the days. 2 And you shall know today that not your sons, whom they did not know and whom they did not see, the discipline of the LORD your God—his greatness, his strong hand, and his outstretched arm. 3 and his signs and his deeds which he did in the midst of Egypt to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to all his land. 4 and what he did to the army of Egypt, to its horses and to its chariots, how he flooded the waters of the Yam Suf upon their faces while they pursued you, and destroyed them; the LORD until this day. 5 and what he did for you in the wilderness until you came to this place. 6 and what he did to Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab son of Reuben, when the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households and their tents and everything that stood at their feet, in the midst of all Israel. 7 for your eyes have seen all the great deeds of the LORD which he did. 8 And you shall keep the whole commandment that I am commanding you today, so that you may strengthen yourselves and go and possess the land that you are crossing over to possess. 9 and in order that you may lengthen your days upon the ground that the LORD swore to your fathers to give to them and to their seed—a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 For the land that you are going there to possess is not like the land of Egypt, from which you came out, where you sow your seed and water it with your foot like a garden of vegetables. 11 And the land to which you are crossing there to possess it—a land of mountains and valleys, drinking water from the rain of the heavens. 12 a land that the LORD your God seeks you continually; the eyes of the LORD your God are on it from the beginning of the year until the end of the year. 13 And it shall be, if you will hear my commandments which I am commanding you today, if you hear them, to love the LORD your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul. 14 And I will give rain for your land in its time, the early rain and the late rain, and you will gather your grain and your new wine and your fresh oil. 15 And I will give grass in your fields for your livestock, and you will eat and be satisfied. 16 Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be enticed and you turn aside and serve other gods and bow down to them. 17 and the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and he will hold back the heavens so that there will be no rain, and the ground will not give its yield, and you will perish quickly from the good land that the LORD has given you. 18 You shall put these words on your heart and on your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 19 And you shall teach them to your sons, speaking in them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. 20 And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. 21 so that your days may multiply and the days of your sons upon the ground which the LORD swore to your fathers to give them, like the days of the heavens upon the earth. 22 For if you will keep all this commandment that I am commanding you to do—to love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, and to cling to him. 23 And the LORD will dispossess all these nations from before you, and you will dispossess nations greater and mightier than you. 24 Every place where the sole of your foot treads upon it will be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the river—the River Euphrates—and to the western sea. It will be your boundary. 25 No man will stand before you. The LORD your God will put the fear of you and the terror of you upon the face of all the earth that you tread upon, just as he spoke to you. 26 See, I have set before you today a blessing and a curse. 27 the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you today. 28 And the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside from the way that I am commanding you today, to go after other gods that you have not known. 29 And it shall be that when the LORD your God brings you into the land that you are entering to possess it, you shall put the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal. 30 Are they not beyond the Jordan, in the direction of the sunset, in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah opposite Gilgal, beside the oaks of Moreh? 31 For you are crossing the Jordan to go in and possess the land that the LORD your God is giving you, and you will possess it and dwell in it. 32 And you shall take care to do all the statutes and the judgments that I am giving before you today.
