1Now a certain man named Ananias, together with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession.2And he kept back from the proceeds, his wife also being conscious of it, and brought a certain portion and laid it at the feet of the apostles.3Then Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart so that you lied to the Holy Spirit and kept back from the proceeds of the place?"4"Did it not remain yours while it stayed, and was it not under your authority once sold? Why did you conceive this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God."5When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and expired, and great fear came upon all who heard.6The young men then rose, wrapped him, carried him out, and buried him.7After an interval of about three hours his wife, not knowing what had occurred, came in.8Peter said to her, "Tell me whether you sold the place for so great a price." She said, "Yes, for so great a price."9Peter said to her, "Why have you agreed to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out."10Immediately she fell down at his feet and expired. The young men entered, found her dead, carried her out, and buried her with her husband.11And great fear came upon the whole assembly and upon all who heard these things.
