Call to Obey

Deuteronomy 4:1-14
1And now, Israel, hear the statutes and the judgments that I am teaching you to do, so that you may live and come in and possess the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving to you. 2You shall not add to the word that I am commanding you, and you shall not take away from it, to keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you. 3Your eyes have seen what the LORD did at Baal of Peor, for the LORD your God destroyed from among you every man who went after Baal of Peor. 4But you who are cleaving to the LORD your God are all alive today. 5See, I have taught you statutes and judgments just as the LORD my God commanded me, so that you should do them in the midst of the land that you are entering to possess. 6And you shall keep and do them, for that is your wisdom and your understanding in the eyes of the peoples who will hear all these statutes and say, 'Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.' 7For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us whenever we call upon him? 8And what great nation is there that has statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law that I am giving before you today. 9Only watch yourself and keep your soul carefully, lest you forget the words that your eyes have seen and lest they turn aside from your heart all the days of your life; and you shall make them known to your sons and to your sons' sons. 10The day when you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, when the LORD said to me, 'Assemble the people to me, and I will let them hear my words so that they may learn to fear me all the days that they are alive upon the land, and so that they may teach their sons.' 11And you came near and stood under the mountain, and the mountain was burning with fire up to the heart of heaven—darkness, cloud, and thick cloud. 12Then the LORD spoke to you from the midst of the fire; you were hearing the sound of words, but you were seeing no form except a voice. 13And he declared to you his covenant that he commanded you to do—the ten words—and he wrote them upon two tablets of stone. 14At that time the LORD also commanded me to teach you the statutes and the judgments that you are to do in the land you are crossing there to possess.
