Deuteronomy

Call to Obey

Chapter 4
1 And now, Israel, hear the statutes and the judgments that I am teaching you to do, so that you may live and come and possess the land that the LORD God of your fathers has given you. 2 You shall not add to the word that I am commanding you, and you shall not diminish from it, in order to keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you. 3 Your eyes have seen what the LORD did at Baal of Peor, for every man who went after Baal of Peor, the LORD your God destroyed him from your midst. 4 And you, the ones clinging to the LORD your God, are alive, all of you today. 5 See, I have taught you statutes and judgments just as the LORD my God commanded, to do them in the midst of the land that you are coming there to possess. 6 You shall keep and do them, for it is your wisdom and your understanding in the eyes of the peoples who will hear all these statutes and say, "Only a wise and discerning people is this great nation!" 7 For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the LORD our God, whenever we call to him? 8 And what great nation has righteous statutes and judgments like all this Torah that I am giving you today? 9 Only take heed to yourself and keep your nephesh very much, lest you forget the words that your eyes saw and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life; and you shall make them known to your sons and to the sons of your sons. 10 the day that you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, when the LORD said to me, "Assemble the people to me, and I will make them hear my words so that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their sons." 11 And you approached and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain blazed with fire to the heart of the heavens—darkness, cloud, and thick darkness. 12 And the LORD spoke to you from the midst of the fire—a voice of words you heard, but you saw no form, only a voice. 13 And he made known to you his covenant, which he commanded you to do—the Ten Words—and he wrote them on two tablets of stone. 14 And the LORD commanded at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, to do them in the land that you are crossing over there to possess.
