Jeroboam Establishes Golden Calves

1 Kings 12:25-33
25Jeroboam built Shechem in Mount Ephraim, and he dwelt in it; then he came out from there and built Peniel. 26Jeroboam said in his heart, "Now the kingdom will return to the house of David." 27If this people goes up to offer sacrifices in the house of the LORD in Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn to their lords, to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah. 28The king took counsel and made two golden calves, and he said to them, "It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Behold your God, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt." 29He placed one in Bethel and set the other in Dan. 30This matter became a sin, and the people walked before the one as far as Dan. 31He built a house of high places and appointed priests from the ends of the people who were not of the sons of Levi. 32Jeroboam instituted a feast in the eighth month on the fifteenth day of the month, like the feast in Judah; he offered upon the altar—so he acted in Bethel—by sacrificing to the calves he had made, and he stationed in Bethel the priests of the high places he had made. 33He offered upon the altar he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day of the eighth month—the month he had devised from his heart alone—and he held a feast for the sons of Israel and offered upon the altar to burn incense.
