The Census of Israel

Chapter 1
1 And the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first of the second month in the second year of their going out from the land of Egypt, saying: 2 Take a census of the head of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by the house of their fathers, by the number of names, every male by their heads. 3 From twenty years old and upward, every one going out with the army in Israel, you shall muster them by their armies, you and Aaron. 4 And with you, there shall be man by man for the tribe, man by man as head of the house of his fathers. 5 These are the names of the men who will stand with you for Reuben: Elizur son of Shedeur. 6 For Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai. 7 To Judah: Nahshon son of Amminadab. 8 For Issachar, Nathanael son of Zuar. 9 For Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon. 10 For the sons of Joseph: to Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; to Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur. 11 For Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni. 12 For Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai. 13 For Asher, Pagiel son of Ochran. 14 For Gad, Elisaph son of Deuel. 15 For Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan. 16 These were the called ones of the assembly, the princes of the tribes of their fathers, the heads of thousands in Israel. 17 Moses and Aaron took these men who were called by name. 18 And they assembled all the congregation on the first day of the second month, and they were mustered by their families, by their fathers' houses, by number of names, from twenty years old and upward, by their heads. 19 just as the LORD commanded Moses. And he mustered them in the Wilderness of Sinai. 20 And the sons of Reuben, firstborn of Israel, their generations by their clans by the house of their fathers by the number of names by their skulls, every male from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host/army. 21 Their mustering for the tribe of Reuben was forty-six thousand five hundred. 22 Of the sons of Simeon, their generations, by their clans, by the house of their fathers, he numbered them by the number of names, by their polls, every male from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host. 23 Their musterings for the tribe of Simeon: fifty-nine thousand three hundred. 24 For the sons of Gad, by their generations, by their families, by the house of their fathers, by number of names, from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out of the army. 25 Their numbering for the tribe of Gad: forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty. 26 To the sons of Judah, their generations, according to their families, according to the house of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every one going out into the army. 27 Their musters for the staff of Judah: seventy-four thousand six hundred. 28 To the sons of Issachar, their generations, to their families, to the house of their fathers, in number of their names, from a son twenty years old and upward, every one going out to the army. 29 Their numbering for the tribe of Issachar: fifty-four thousand four hundred. 30 To the sons of Zebulun, their generations, to their clans, to the house of their fathers, in number of names, from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host. 31 Their musterings for the staff of Zebulun: fifty-seven thousand four hundred. 32 Of the sons of Joseph: the sons of Ephraim, their generations by their families, by their fathers' houses, the number of those named, from twenty years old and upward, everyone going out to the army. 33 Their numbering for the tribe of Ephraim: forty thousand five hundred. 34 For the sons of Manasseh, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, by number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out with the host. 35 Their oversight appointments for the staff of Manasseh: thirty-two thousand two hundred. 36 To the sons of Benjamin, their generations, their families, the houses of their fathers, by the number of names, from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the army. 37 Their numbered ones for the tribe of Benjamin: thirty-five thousand four hundred. 38 To the sons of Dan, their generations, to their families, to the house of their fathers, in number, every one from a son twenty years and upward who goes out to the army. 39 Their numbering for the staff of Dan: sixty-two thousand seven hundred. 40 The sons of Asher, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, by number of names, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone going out with the army. 41 Their musters for the staff of Moses: forty-one thousand five hundred. 42 The sons of Naphtali, their generations by their families, by their fathers' houses, the number of names from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to the army. 43 Their oversight/appointments for the staff of Naphtali: fifty-three thousand four hundred. 44 These are the ones whom Moses and Aaron and the princes of Israel appointed, twelve men; each one was a man for the house of his fathers. 45 So all the mustered ones of the sons of Israel, by their fathers' houses, from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to the army in Israel. 46 And they were all the cultic overseers: six hundred thousand and three thousand five hundred and fifty. 47 The Levites were not mustered among them by their fathers' tribe. 48 The LORD said to Moses: 49 Only you shall not appoint the tribe of Levi, and you shall not lift up their head among the sons of Israel. 50 And you, appoint the Levites over the Tabernacle of the Testimony, and over all its utensils, and over all that belongs to it. They shall bear the Tabernacle and all its utensils, and they shall perform priestly service for it, and they shall encamp around the Tabernacle. 51 And when the tabernacle sets out, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle camps, the Levites shall set it up. The stranger who draws near shall be put to death. 52 The sons of Israel encamped, each man by his camp and each man by his standard for their heavenly host. 53 The Levites shall encamp all around the Tabernacle of the Testimony, and there shall not be wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel. The Levites shall keep the charge of the Tabernacle of the Testimony. 54 The sons of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses; so they did.
