The Census of Israel

Numbers 1:1-54
1The LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month in the second year after their coming out from the land of Egypt, saying, 2Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, every male, head by head. 3From twenty years old and upward, all who go out to war in Israel, you and Aaron shall number them by their armies. 4And there shall be with you a man from each tribe, each one the head of his father's house. 5These are the names of the men who shall stand with you: from Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur; 6from Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai; 7from Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab; 8from Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar; 9from Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon; 10from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; 15from Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan. 16These are the chosen ones of the congregation, the leaders of the tribes of their fathers, the heads of the thousands of Israel. 17Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name, 18and on the first day of the second month they assembled the whole congregation, and they registered themselves by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, head by head. 19As the LORD had commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai. 20The sons of Reuben, Israel's firstborn, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to war, 21those enrolled from the tribe of Reuben were 46,500. 22The sons of Simeon, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, those enrolled of them according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to war, 23those enrolled from the tribe of Simeon were 59,300. 24The sons of Gad, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to war, 25those enrolled from the tribe of Gad were 45,650. 26The sons of Judah, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to war, 27those enrolled from the tribe of Judah were 74,600. 28The sons of Issachar, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to war, 29those enrolled from the tribe of Issachar were 54,400. 30The sons of Zebulun, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to war, 31those enrolled from the tribe of Zebulun were 57,400. 32The sons of Joseph: the sons of Ephraim, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to war, 33those enrolled from the tribe of Ephraim were 40,500. 34The sons of Manasseh, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to war, 35those enrolled from the tribe of Manasseh were 32,200. 36The sons of Benjamin, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to war, 37those enrolled from the tribe of Benjamin were 35,400. 38The sons of Dan, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to war, 39those enrolled from the tribe of Dan were 62,700. 40The sons of Asher, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to war, 41those enrolled from the tribe of Asher were 41,500. 42The sons of Naphtali, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to war, 43those enrolled from the tribe of Naphtali were 53,400. 44These are the ones who were numbered by Moses and Aaron and the leaders of Israel, twelve men, one from each father's house. 45All the numbered men of the sons of Israel, by their fathers' houses, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to war in Israel, 46all those who were numbered were 603,550. 47The Levites, however, were not numbered among them by their ancestral tribe. 48The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 49Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number, and you shall not take a census of their heads among the sons of Israel. 50You shall appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony and over all its vessels and over everything that belongs to it; they shall carry the tabernacle and all its vessels, and they shall attend to it, and they shall camp around the tabernacle. 51Whenever the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up; and if any outsider approaches, he shall be put to death. 52The sons of Israel shall encamp, each man in his own camp and each man by his own standard, according to their armies. 53The Levites shall encamp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there may be no wrath upon the congregation of the sons of Israel; and the Levites shall keep guard over the tabernacle of the testimony. 54Thus the sons of Israel did according to all that the LORD had commanded Moses; so they did.
