Joash's Temple Restoration under Jehoiada

2 Chronicles 24:1-16

Chapter 24
1 Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Zibiah from Beersheba. 2 And Joash did what was upright in the eyes of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest. 3 Jehoiada took two wives for him, and he fathered sons and daughters. 4 After these things, Joash set his heart to renew the house of the LORD. 5 He gathered the priests and the Levites and said to them, "Go out to the cities of Judah and gather from all Israel silver to strengthen the house of your God year by year, and see that you hurry about the matter." But the Levites did not hurry. 6 The king called to Jehoiada the head and said to him, "Why have you not required the Levites to bring in from Judah and from Jerusalem the tribute of Moses, the servant of the LORD, that the assembly of Israel gave to the tent of the testimony?" 7 For Athaliah, that wicked woman, her sons had broken into the house of God, and they had also used all the holy things of the house of the LORD for the Baals. 8 The king gave orders, and they made a chest. He placed it outside at the gate of the house of the LORD. 9 They issued a proclamation in Judah and in Jerusalem to bring to the LORD the contribution that Moses, the servant of God, required of Israel in the wilderness. 10 All the rulers and all the people rejoiced. They brought it and threw it into the ark until it was full. 11 Whenever the Levites brought the chest to the king's oversight, and when they saw that there was a large amount of silver, the king's scribe and the chief priest would come, empty the chest, carry it back, and set it in its place. They did this day by day, and gathered silver in abundance. 12 And the king and Jehoiada gave it to those doing the work of the service of the house of the LORD, and they hired stonecutters and craftsmen to renew the house of the LORD, and also smiths of iron and bronze to strengthen the house of the LORD. 13 The workers did the work, and the progress on the work in their hands went up. They restored the house of God to its proper state, and they strengthened it. 14 And when they had finished, they brought the rest of the silver before the king and Jehoiada, and they made it into vessels for the house of the LORD—vessels of service, for the burnt offering, and bowls, and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the LORD continually, all the days of Jehoiada. 15 Jehoiada grew old and was full of days, and he died, one hundred and thirty years old. At his death. 16 And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he did good in Israel, both with God and his house.
