Genesis

Joseph and the Famine

Chapter 47
13 And there was no bread in all the land, for the famine was very heavy, and the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine. 14 And Joseph gathered all the silver that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan for the grain they were buying, and Joseph brought the silver into Pharaoh's house. 15 And when the silver was all spent in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all Egypt came to Joseph and said, "Give us bread. Why should we die before you? For our silver is gone." 16 And Joseph said, "Bring your livestock, and I will give you bread in exchange for your livestock, since the silver is gone." 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for the horses, the flocks of sheep, the herds of cattle, and the donkeys. He kept them alive with bread for that year with all their livestock. 18 When that year was ended, they came to him the second year and said to him, "We will not hide from my lord that the silver is gone, and the livestock of our animals—nothing is left in the sight of my lord but our bodies and our land." 19 Why should we die before your eyes—both we and our ground? Buy us and our ground for bread, and we and our ground will be slaves to Pharaoh. And give us seed, so we will live and not die, and the ground will not be desolate. 20 And Joseph acquired all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for the Egyptians sold each his field, because the famine had grown strong upon them, and the land became Pharaoh's. 21 And he relocated the people to the cities, from one end of the border of Egypt to the other. 22 Only the land of the priests he did not buy, for the priests had a statute from Pharaoh, and they ate their statute which Pharaoh gave them. On account of this, they did not sell their land. 23 And Joseph said to the people, "Behold, I have bought you today and your land for Pharaoh. Here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land." 24 And it will be at the produce of the field, and you will give a fifth to Pharaoh, and four parts will be yours for seed of the field and for your eating and for those in your houses and for eating for your little ones. 25 And they said, "We have found favor in the eyes of my lord, and we will be servants to Pharaoh." 26 And Joseph made it a statute until this day on the land of Egypt for Pharaoh—a fifth. Only the land of the priests alone did not become Pharaoh's. 27 And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen, and they took hold of it and they fruited and they multiplied greatly. 28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years, and the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were a hundred and forty-seven years. 29 And the days of Israel drew near to die, and he called his son Joseph and said to him, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, please put your hand under my thigh and do covenant loyalty and truth with me; please do not bury me in Egypt." 30 And I will lie down with my fathers, and you will carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burying place. And he said, "I will do according to your word." 31 And he said, "Swear to me." And he swore to him, and Israel bowed down upon the head of his staff.
