- Therefore the Jews of Shushan the citadel established and made the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month Adar days of feasting and gladness, and of sending portions to one another; but the Jews who were in the villages made the fourteenth day only a day of gladness and feasting, and of sending portions to one another.
- But the Jews who were in the villages of the country gathered themselves together, stood for their lives, gained relief from their enemies, and slew seventy‑five thousand of those who hated them; and they did not lay hands on the spoil.

- The matter of Purim was written down in the book.
- and that these days should be remembered and kept in every generation, in every family, in every province, and in every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail among the Jews, nor the remembrance of them perish from their offspring.
But the Jews who were in Shushan assembled also on the fourteenth day of the month Adar; and they slew three hundred men in Shushan, yet they did not take any plunder.
On the fifteenth they rested and made it a day of feasting and gladness.
Then Mordecai recorded these events and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus—near and far—
that they should observe among themselves the fourteenth and the fifteenth days of the month Adar, year by year,
as the days on which the Jews gained relief from their enemies, and as the month that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, of sending portions to one another, and of gifts to the poor.
The Jews accepted upon themselves and upon their descendants, and upon all who might join them, that these days should be observed according to their written ordinances and at their appointed time every year.
For Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had cast Pur (that is, the lot) to destroy and to consume them, and he had prepared a gallows fifty cubits high to hang Mordecai on. But when the matter came before the king, the command and the edict were carried out, and the very thing Haman had plotted against the Jews returned upon his own head; so they hanged Haman and his ten sons.
Therefore these days were called Purim—because of the lot (Pur) that had been cast—and for all time, for every generation, they are to be remembered and kept among the Jews, and the remembrance of them shall not perish among their descendants.
Mordecai and Esther wrote and confirmed in writing these things, commanding that these two days should be observed as they had been prescribed and as they had been established. And the command of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was written in the book.
The letters were sealed with the king's signet ring and the decree was sent by couriers on swift horses and by mounted messengers from the king.
The couriers went out in haste to all the provinces of the king, to every province in its own script and to every people in their own language, proclaiming that every man should be master in his house and celebrate these days according to the law for his people and for his offspring.
The decree of Queen Esther established these matters of Purim, and it was written down among the records.
Esther the queen, daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew wrote with full authority, confirming these things; and the record stands.
