21Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorite, saying,22Let me pass through your land; we will not turn aside into field or vineyard, nor will we drink water from a well; we will go along the king's way until we have passed your border.23But Sihon would not permit Israel to pass through his border; instead Sihon gathered all his people and marched out to meet Israel in the wilderness. He came to Jahaz and fought against Israel.24Israel struck him with the edge of the sword and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the territory of the sons of Ammon, because the border of the sons of Ammon was strong.25Israel captured all these cities and settled in all the cities of the Amorite—in Heshbon and in all its surrounding villages.26Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorite, who had earlier fought against the king of Moab and taken all his land from his hand as far as the Arnon.27Therefore those who speak in proverbs say, "Come to Heshbon; let the city of Sihon be built and established."28For fire went out from Heshbon, a flame from the town of Sihon; it consumed Ar of Moab, the lords of the high places of Arnon.29Woe to you, Moab! You have perished, O people of Chemosh; he has given his sons as fugitives and his daughters into captivity to Sihon king of the Amorite.30We destroyed them; Heshbon has perished as far as Dibon, and we laid waste as far as Nophah, which extends to Medeba.31So Israel settled in the land of the Amorite.32Moses sent men to spy out Jazer, and they captured its villages; then Israel took possession of the Amorites who were there.33They turned and went up the road to Bashan. Og king of Bashan came out with all his people to confront them in battle at Edrei.34The LORD said to Moses, "Do not fear him, for I have given him and all his people and his land into your hand; you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorite who dwelt in Heshbon."35They struck him and his sons and all his people, leaving no survivor, and they took possession of his land.
