  • These were David’s mighty men—listed in full.

These are the chiefs of the mighty men who belonged to David—those who strengthened him in his rule, with all Israel, to crown him according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel. And this is the number of the mighty men who belonged to David: Jashobeam son of Hachmoni was chief of the thirty; he wielded his spear against three hundred slain at one time.

After him was Eleazar son of Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men.

He was with David at Pas-dammim when the Philistines were gathered there for battle; and the harvest field was full of barley, and the people fled before the Philistines.

They stood in the midst of the field and defended it, so they delivered the harvest and struck the Philistines; and the LORD brought about a great victory.

Three of the thirty chiefs went down and came to David at the cave of Adullam, while a band of the Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim.

David then was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was then at Bethlehem. And David longed and said, “Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem that is by the gate!” So the three broke through the Philistine camp, drew water from the well of Bethlehem that is by the gate, and carried it and brought it to David; but David would not drink it—he poured it out to the LORD. And he said, “Far be it from me before my God that I should do this—shall I drink the blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives?” For they had risked their lives and brought it; therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men.

Abishai, Joab’s brother, was chief of the three; he raised his spear against three hundred and slew them, and had a name among the three.

Among the three he was held in honor; he became their commander, though he was not one of the three.

Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, performed deeds of valor: he struck down two heroes of Moab; he also went down and struck a lion in the midst of a pit on a snowy day.

He struck down an Egyptian, a man of great stature—five cubits tall; in the Egyptian’s hand was a spear like a weaver’s beam. Benaiah went down, wrested the spear from the Egyptian’s hand, and killed him with his own spear.

These things Benaiah son of Jehoiada did, and he had a name among the three mighty men.

He was more honored than the thirty, but he was not one of the three; and David set him over his bodyguard. And among the mighty warriors were the brother of Joab, Elhanan son of Dodo of Bethlehem.
