8Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim.9Moses said to Joshua, "Choose men for us and go out to fight against Amalek tomorrow. I myself will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand."10Joshua did as Moses had said to him, to fight against Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.11And it happened whenever Moses raised his hand, Israel prevailed; and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed.12The hands of Moses were heavy, so they took a stone and placed it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on this side and one on that side, and his hands remained steady until the sun set.13Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.14The LORD said to Moses, "Write this as a memorial in a book and place it in the ears of Joshua, for I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven."15Moses built an altar and called its name The LORD Is My Banner.16He said, "A hand upon the throne of the LORD: the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation."
