1And Athaliah, mother of Ahaziah, saw that her son had died, and she arose and destroyed all the seed of the kingdom.2And Jehosheba, daughter of King Joram and sister of Ahaziah, took Joash son of Ahaziah. She stole him from the midst of the sons of the king who were put to death with him, and his nurse hid him in the inner chamber of the beds. And they hid him from the face of Athaliah, and he was not put to death.3She was in the temple of the LORD, hiding for six years, while Athaliah reigned over the land.4And in the seventh year Jehoiada sent and took the captains of the hundreds, the Carites and the runners, and brought them to him in the temple of the LORD. And he made a covenant with them and had them swear in the temple of the LORD, and showed them the king's son.5And he commanded, saying, "This is the word that you shall do: a third of you, the incoming ones on the Sabbath and the keepers of the sacred charge of the House of the king."6A third shall be at the Sur gate, and a third at the other gate of the runners, and you shall guard the house to prevent anyone from turning aside.7And two companies of you, all the outgoing ones of the Sabbath, and keep the sacred charge of the House of the LORD toward the king.8Surround the king on all sides, each man with his weapons in his hand. Put to death anyone who approaches the guard posts, and stay with the king in his going out and coming in.9And the captains of the hundreds did according to all that Jehoiada the priest had commanded, and each man took his men—those coming in on the Sabbath with those going out on the Sabbath—and they came to Jehoiada the priest.10And he gave the captains of the hundreds the spear and the shields that had belonged to King David, which were in the house of the LORD.11And the runners stood, each man with his weapons in his hand, from the right side of the house to the left side of the house, by the altar and the house, all around the king.12And he brought out the king's son and put the diadem and the testimony upon him and they made him king and they anointed him and they struck palms and they said, "Long live the king."13And Athaliah heard the voice of the people running, and she came to the people in the House of the LORD.14And she looked, and there was the king standing by the pillar according to the custom, and the chiefs and the trumpets by the king, and all the people of the land rejoicing, and she blew the trumpets. And Athaliah tore her garments and cried, "Conspiracy! Conspiracy!"15And Jehoiada the priest commanded the chiefs of the hundreds, the appointees of the army, and he said to them: "Bring her out between the ranks, and the one coming after her—let him be dead by the sword." For the priest said, "Do not put to death in the house of the LORD."16They laid hands on her, and she went by the way of the entrance of the horses to the king's house, and she was put to death there.17And Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people, that they should be the LORD's people, and between the king and the people.18And all the people of the land came to the temple of Baal and demolished it. They thoroughly broke its altars and its images, and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest set the Pekodim over the temple of the LORD.19And he took the captains of the hundreds and the Cherethites and the Pelethites and all the people of the land, and they went down with the king from the house of the LORD, and they came by way of the gate of the runners to the house of the king, and he sat on the throne of the kings.20And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet, and they killed Athaliah with the sword in the house of the kingly authority figure.21Jehoash was seven years old when he began to reign.
