1 Samuel

Saul and the Witch of Endor

28
Chapter 28
1 In those days the Philistines gathered their camps for war against Israel. And Achish said to David, "You will know—you will know that you and your men will go out with me in the camp." 2 And David said to Achish, "Therefore you will know what your servant can do." And Achish said to David, "Therefore I will make you my bodyguard for life." 3 Samuel died, and all Israel mourned for him and buried him in Ramah, his city. Saul removed the ghost-spirits and the familiar spirits from the land. 4 And the Philistines gathered and came and encamped at Shunem, and Saul gathered all Israel and they encamped at Gilboa. 5 And Saul saw the camp of the Philistines, and he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly. 6 And Saul inquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not answer him, not even in dreams, not even in the Urim, not even in prophets. 7 And Saul said to his servant, "Seek out for me a woman who has a familiar spirit, and I will go to her and inquire of her." And his servant said to him, "Look, there is a woman who has a familiar spirit at En Dor." 8 And Saul disguised himself and put on other garments, and he went, he and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night. And he said, "Divine for me by a familiar spirit and bring up for me the one whom I say to you." 9 And the woman said to him, "Look, you know what Saul has done, how he cut off the mediums and spiritists from the land. Why are you laying a snare for my life to put me to death?" 10 And Saul swore to her by the LORD, saying, "As the LORD lives, no iniquity will be found in you for this matter." 11 And the woman said, "Whom shall I bring up for you?" And he said, "Samuel—bring him up for me." 12 And the woman saw Samuel and cried out with a loud voice. And the woman said to Saul, "Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!" 13 And the king said to her, "Do not fear. What did you see?" And she said, "I saw a divine being ascending from the earth." 14 He said to her, "What is his form?" She said, "An old man is coming up, and he is wrapped in a robe." Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he bowed his face earthward and prostrated himself. 15 And Shemuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me to bring me up?" And Saul said, "I am greatly distressed, and the Philistines are fighting against me, and God has turned away from me and has not answered me anymore, either by the hand of the prophets or in dreams, so I have called to you to make known to me what I should do." 16 And Samuel said, "Why do you ask me, when the LORD has turned away from you and has become your enemy?" 17 And the LORD has done to him just as he spoke through me, and the LORD has torn the kingdom from your hand and given it to your friend, to David. 18 Just as you did not obey the voice of the LORD and did not carry out his fierce anger against Amalek, for this reason the LORD has done this to you today. 19 And the LORD will give Israel with you also into the hand of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons with me; also the camp of Israel, the LORD will give into the hand of the Philistines. 20 And Saul hurried and fell full length on the ground, and he feared greatly because of the divine words of Samuel. Also he had no strength, for he had eaten no bread all the day and all the night. 21 And the woman came to Saul, and she saw that he was greatly terrified. And she said to him, "Look, your maidservant has obeyed your voice, and I have put my soul in my palm, and I will obey the words that you have spoken to me." 22 And now, please listen—you also—to the voice of your handmaid. I will set a piece of bread before you, and you will eat, and there will be might in you because you will go on the way. 23 He refused and said, "No, I will not eat." But his servants pressed him, and the woman also pressed him. He obeyed their voice, arose from the earth, and sat on the couch. 24 The woman had a fatted calf in the house. She hurried, sacrificed it, took flour, kneaded it, and baked unleavened cakes. 25 And she served Saul and his servants, and they ate. Then they arose and went away that night.
