1At that time Abijah son of Jeroboam became weak.2Jeroboam said to his wife, "Rise, please, and disguise yourself so that they will not know that you are the wife of Jeroboam, and go to Shiloh. Behold, Ahijah the prophet is there; he spoke concerning me for king over this people."3Take ten loaves of bread, some cakes, and a jar of honey in your hand and go to him; he will tell you what will happen to the boy.4The wife of Jeroboam did so; she arose and went to Shiloh and came to the house of Ahijah. Ahijah could not see, because his eyes had become dim from age.5The LORD had said to Ahijah, "Behold, the wife of Jeroboam is coming to seek a word from you concerning her son, for he is weak; thus and thus you shall speak to her. When she comes she will be disguising herself."6When Ahijah heard the sound of her feet as she came in the entrance, he said, "Come in, wife of Jeroboam. Why are you disguising yourself? I have been sent to you with a severe message."7Go, tell Jeroboam: Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Because I lifted you up from among the people and made you leader over my people Israel,8and tore the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it to you, yet you have not been like my servant David, who kept my commandments and followed me with all his heart, doing only what was right in my eyes,9but you have done more evil than all who were before you. You have gone and made for yourself other gods and metal images to provoke me to anger, and you have cast me behind your back.10Therefore, behold, I am bringing distress upon the house of Jeroboam and will cut off from Jeroboam every one urinating against a wall, restrained and forsaken, in Israel, and I will burn after the house of Jeroboam as one burns dung until it is finished.11Anyone belonging to Jeroboam who dies in the city the dogs will eat, and anyone who dies in the country the birds of the air will eat; for the LORD has spoken.12As for you, get up and go to your house. When your feet enter the city the child will die.13All Israel will mourn for him and bury him, for he alone of Jeroboam's house will come to the grave, because something pleasing to the LORD, the God of Israel, was found in him.14Moreover the LORD will raise up for himself a king over Israel who will cut off the house of Jeroboam on this very day. What more can be said?15The LORD will strike Israel as the branch is shaken in the water, and he will uproot Israel from this good land that he gave to their fathers and scatter them beyond the River, because they made their Asherah, provoking the LORD.16He will give Israel over because of the sins Jeroboam committed and because he caused Israel to commit sin.17Then Jeroboam's wife got up and left; she went to Tirzah, and as she crossed the threshold of the house the child died.18They buried him, and all Israel mourned for him according to the word the LORD had spoken through his servant Ahijah the prophet.19The rest of the acts of Jeroboam, how he waged war and how he reigned, are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.20The time that Jeroboam reigned was twenty-two years; then he slept with his fathers, and his son Nadab reigned in his place.
