Chapter 16
1 And the LORD said to Shemuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, when I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have seen a king for myself among his sons." 2 Shemuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me." And the LORD said, "Take a heifer with you and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.'" 3 You shall call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will make known to you what you are to do. You shall anoint for me the one I say to you. 4 Samuel did what the LORD had spoken, and he came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city trembled to meet him, and he said, "Peace be with you." 5 He said, "Peace be with you for the sacrifice to the LORD. I have come. Sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice." And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6 When they came, he saw Eliab and said, "Surely the LORD's anointed is before him." 7 But the LORD said to Shemuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, for I have rejected him. For it is not what humanity sees that the human sees. For the human sees with the eyes, and the LORD sees into the heart." 8 Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Shemuel. And he said, "Even in this one the LORD has not chosen." 9 Jesse had him pass by, and he said, "The LORD has not chosen this one either." 10 Jesse presented his seven sons to Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, "The LORD has not chosen these." 11 Samuel said to Jesse, "Have you presented all the young men?" He said, "There still remains the youngest, and behold, he is pasturing the flock." Samuel said to Jesse, "Send and bring him, for we will not sit down until he comes here." 12 He sent and brought him in, and he was ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a good appearance. And the LORD said, "Rise, anoint him, for this is he." 13 Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers, and the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward. Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
