28King David answered and said, Call Bathsheba to me. She came before the king and stood before the king.29The king swore and said, As the LORD lives, who has ransomed my soul from every distress,30just as I swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel, saying, Solomon your son shall reign after me and shall sit on my throne in my place, for I will do so this day.31Bathsheba bowed with her face to the ground and bowed to the king and said, May my lord King David live forever.32King David said, Call Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada to me. They came before the king.33The king said to them, Take with you the servants of your lord and set Solomon my son on my female mule and bring him down to Gihon.34Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet shall anoint him king over Israel there, and you shall blow the trumpet and say, May King Solomon live.35You shall go up after him, and he shall come and sit on my throne in my place; he shall reign in my place, and I have commanded him to be ruler over Israel and Judah.36Benaiah son of Jehoiada answered the king and said, Amen. May the LORD, the God of my lord the king, say so.37As the LORD has been with my lord the king, so may he be with Solomon, and may he make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.38Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites went down and set Solomon on King David's female mule and led him to Gihon.39Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon; they blew the trumpet, and all the people said, May King Solomon live.40All the people went up after him; the people played flutes and rejoiced with great joy, and the land split open at their voice.41Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard, and they had finished eating, when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet and said, Why is the city in an uproar?42While he was still speaking, Jonathan son of Abiathar the priest arrived and said, Adonijah, come in, for you are a man of valor and bring good news.43Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Truly our lord King David has made Solomon king.44The king sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they set him on the king's female mule.45Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anointed him king at Gihon; they came up from there rejoicing, and the city was in an uproar. That is the sound you heard.46Solomon has also sat on the royal throne.47The king's servants also came to bless our lord King David, saying, May your God make Solomon's name greater than your name and exalt his throne above your throne. The king bowed on the bed.48The king also said, Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who has today granted one to sit on my throne while my eyes see it.49All the guests who were with Adonijah trembled, rose, and went away, each to his own way.50Adonijah was afraid of Solomon; he rose, went, and took hold of the horns of the altar.51It was reported to Solomon, Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon and has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, "Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death by the sword."52Solomon said, If he proves to be a son of valor, not a hair of his shall fall to the ground; but if any harm is found in him, he shall die.53King Solomon sent men who brought him down from the altar; he came and bowed before King Solomon, and Solomon said to him, "Go to your house."
