18Rehoboam took a wife for himself, Mahalath daughter of Jerimoth son of David and Abihail daughter of Eliab son of Jesse.19She bore sons to him: Jeush, Shemariah, and Zaham.20Afterward he took Maacah daughter of Absalom, and she bore Abijah, Attai, Ziza, and Shelomith to him.21Rehoboam loved Maacah daughter of Absalom more than all his wives and concubines, because he had taken eighteen wives and sixty concubines; he fathered twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.22Rehoboam appointed Abijah son of Maacah as head and leader among his brothers, because he planned to make him king.23He acted with understanding and broke through beyond all his sons throughout all the lands of Judah and Benjamin and all the fortified cities; he supplied them with abundant food and sought a great number of wives.
