The Death and Burial of Sarah

Genesis 23:1-20
1The years of the life of Sarah were one hundred years and twenty years and seven years, the years of the life of Sarah. 2Sarah died in Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. 3Abraham rose from beside his dead and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying, 4I am a sojourner and a resident among you; give me a possession of a grave among you, that I may bury my dead from before me. 5The sons of Heth answered Abraham and said to him, 6Hear us, my lord: you are a leader of God among us; in the choicest of our graves bury your dead; none of us will withhold his grave from you for burying your dead. 7Abraham rose and bowed down before the people of the land, before the sons of Heth, 8and he spoke with them, saying, If it is your wish to bury my dead from before me, hear me and intercede for me with Ephron son of Zohar, 9that he may give me the cave of Machpelah that belongs to him, which is at the end of his field; at full silver let him give it to me in your midst as a possession of a grave. 10Ephron was dwelling in the midst of the sons of Heth, and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the ears of the sons of Heth, before all who came to the gate of his city, saying, 11No, my lord, hear me: the field I give to you, and the cave that is in it, to you I give it; before the eyes of the sons of my people I give it to you; bury your dead. 12Abraham bowed down before the people of the land 13and spoke to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying, If you will listen to me, I will pay the price of the field; accept it from me so that I may bury my dead there. 14Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him, 15My lord, hear me: a land of four hundred shekels of silver—what is that between me and you? Bury your dead. 16Abraham heard Ephron, and Abraham weighed out for Ephron the silver that he had spoken in the ears of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, passing for the trader. 17So Ephron's field in Machpelah, which faced Mamre, the field and the cave that was in it, and all the trees that were in the field within its entire boundary around it, 18passed to Abraham as a purchase in the presence of the sons of Heth, before all who entered the gate of his city. 19After this Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah, upon the face of Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan. 20Thus the field and the cave that was in it were established as Abraham's burial possession from the sons of Heth.
