1David then left that place and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and all his father's household heard of it, they went down to him there.2Everyone who was in distress, everyone who had a creditor, and everyone who was bitter of soul gathered to him, and he became ruler over them. About four hundred men stayed with him.3From there David went to Mizpeh of Moab and said to the king of Moab, 'Please let my father and my mother stay with you until I learn what God will do for me.'4He brought them into the presence of the king of Moab, and they remained with him during all the time that David stayed in the fortress.5The prophet Gad said to David, 'Do not remain in the fortress. Go instead to the land of Judah.' So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.
