Consecration of the Firstborn

Exodus 13:1-16

Chapter 13
1 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying. 2 Consecrate to me every firstborn, the opener of every womb among the sons of Israel, both in man and in beast; it is mine. 3 And Moses said to the people, "Remember this day in which you came out from Egypt, from a house of slaves, for with a strong hand the LORD brought you out from this. Leaven shall not be eaten." 4 Today, in the month of spring, you are going out. 5 And it shall be that when the LORD brings you to the land of the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Hivite and the Jebusite, which he swore to your fathers to give to you, a land flowing with milk and honey, and you shall serve this service in this month. 6 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a festival to the LORD. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten for seven days, and leaven shall not be seen by you, nor shall any remnant of it be seen by you in all your territory. 8 You shall tell your son on that day, saying, "It is because of this that the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt." 9 It shall be for you as a sign on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, so that the Torah of the LORD may be in your mouth, for with a strong hand the LORD brought you out of Egypt. 10 You shall keep this statute at its appointed time, year by year. 11 And it shall be, when the LORD brings you to the land of the Canaanite, as he swore to you and to your fathers, and gives it to you. 12 You shall set apart for the LORD every firstborn from the womb, and every firstborn male offspring of your livestock. 13 You shall redeem every firstborn donkey with a sheep. If you do not redeem it, you shall break its neck. And you shall redeem every firstborn among your sons. 14 In the future, when your son asks you, "What is this?" you will say to him, "With a strong hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery." 15 And it was, when Pharaoh hardened his heart and would not send us away, that the LORD killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of man to the firstborn of beast. Therefore I sacrifice to the LORD every male opener of the womb, and every firstborn of my sons I redeem. 16 It shall be a sign on your hand and frontlets between your eyes, for with a strong hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt.
