Living as a New Creation: Ethical Exhortations

Ephesians 4:17-5:21

Chapter 4
17 This therefore I say and testify in the Lord, that you no longer walk as the nations also walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 having their minds darkened, being alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their hearts, 19 who, having utterly despaired of themselves, handed themselves over to sensuality for a trade of every impurity in greed. 20 But you did not learn the Christ in this way, 21 if indeed you heard him and were taught in him, just as is truth in Jesus, 22 to put off, according to your former conduct, the old man—the one being corrupted according to the desires of the deception— 23 but be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and to put on the new man, the one created according to God in righteousness and holiness of the truth. 25 Therefore, having put off falsehood, speak truth each with his neighbor, because we are members of one another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil. 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him toil, working with his own hands what is good, so that he might have something to share with the one in need. 29 Let no rotten word proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for edification according to the need, so that it may give grace to the hearers. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and outcry and blasphemy be put away from you, together with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ also forgave you.

Chapter 5
1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 and walk in love, just as Christ also loved us and handed himself over for us, a sacrifice and offering to God for a fragrance of sweet aroma. 3 But sexual immorality, all impurity, and greed must not even be named among you, as is proper for holy ones. 4 and filthiness and foolish talk or wittiness, which are not fitting, but rather thanksgiving. 5 For you know this: that no fornicator or unclean person or covetous man—who is an idolater—has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not become partakers with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light. 9 For the fruit of the light is in all goodness and righteousness and truth. 10 discerning what is pleasing to the Lord; 11 And do not share in the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. 12 For the things being done by them in secret are shameful even to speak of. 13 but all things that are reproved are manifested by the Light, 14 For everything being revealed is light. Therefore it says: "Arise, sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." 15 See therefore exactly how you walk—not as unwise but as wise— 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not become fools, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled in the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your hearts to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of Christ.
