22They listened to him up to this word. Then they raised their voices, saying, "Away with such a fellow from the earth! For it is not fitting for him to live."23And as they were shouting, throwing their garments, and tossing dust into the air,24The chiliarch ordered him to be led into the barracks, saying to examine him with whips in order that he might ascertain through what cause they were crying out against him in this way.25As they were stretching him out with the straps, Paul said to the centurion standing by, "Is it legal for you to scourge a man who is a Roman and uncondemned?"26But when the centurion heard this, he went to the chiliarch and reported, "What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman."27But approaching, the chiliarch said to him, "Tell me, are you a Roman?" He said, "Yes."28But the chiliarch answered, "I acquired this citizenship with much capital." But Paul said, "But I was even born."29Immediately therefore those about to examine him stood away from him; and the chiliarch also feared, having recognized that he is a Roman and that he had bound him.30But the next day, wishing to know for certain what he was accused of by the Jews, he released him and ordered the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin to assemble. Then he brought Paul down and set him before them.

Chapter 23
1But fixing his gaze on the Sanhedrin council, Paul said, "Men, brothers, I have conducted myself toward God with all good conscience until this day."2But the high priest Ananias ordered those standing by him to strike his mouth.3Then Paul said to him, "God is about to strike you, you whitewashed wall! And you, while judging me according to the Law, command me to be struck while acting lawlessly?"4But those standing by said, "Do you revile God's high priest?"5And Paul said, "I did not know, brothers, that he is the chief priest; for it is written, 'You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.'"6But knowing that one part is of Sadducees and the other of Pharisees, he cried out in the Sanhedrin: "Men, brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees; concerning hope and resurrection of the dead I am judged."7And as he said this, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the crowd was divided.8For the Sadducees say there is no resurrection, neither angel nor spirit, but the Pharisees confess both.9There was a great clamor, however, and some of the scribes from the Pharisees' side stood up and contended, saying, "We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit has spoken to him, or an angel..."10But with much division happening, the tribune, fearing lest Paul be torn apart by them, ordered the military unit to go down, snatch him from their midst, and lead him into the military camp.11On the next night, the Lord stood by him and said, "Take courage, for just as I have solemnly testified to the things concerning me in Jerusalem, so it is necessary for you also in Rome to testify."
