The Glory and Gathering of Zion

Isaiah 60:1-22

Chapter 60
1 Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has dawned over you. 2 For behold, darkness will cover the earth and thick darkness the nations, but the LORD will rise over you and his glory will appear over you. 3 And nations will walk to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. 4 Lift up your eyes all around and see: all of them have gathered; they have come to you. Your sons from far away will come, and your daughters will be nursed on the side. 5 Then you will see and gleam and fear and your heart will broaden, for the abundance of the sea and the wealth of nations will turn to you; their riches will come to you. 6 An abundance of camels will cover you, the rams of Midian and Ephah, all of them from Sheba. They will come; they will carry gold and frankincense, and they will proclaim the praise of the LORD. 7 All the sheep of Kedar—they will be gathered to you; the rams of Nebaioth—they will minister to you; they will ascend upon the acceptance of my altar, and the house of my beauty I will beautify. 8 Who are these that fly like a cloud and like doves to their dovecotes? 9 For the isles wait for me, and ships of Tarshish at their head, to bring your sons from afar, their silver and gold with them, to the Name of the LORD your God and to the Holy One of Israel, for your glory. 10 And foreigners’ sons will build your walls, and their kings will serve you; for in my wrath I struck you, and in my favor I had compassion on you. 11 And your gates shall open continually, day and night; they shall not be shut, to bring to you the wealth of nations, and their kings being led. 12 For the nation and kingdom that will not serve you will perish, and the nation’s sword will devastate. 13 The glory of Lebanon will come to you, cypress, plane tree, and Lebanon cedar together, to glorify the place of my sanctuary, and the place of my feet I will honor. 14 The sons of those who afflicted you will come to you bending low, and those who despised you will bow down at the soles of your feet. They will call you the City of the LORD, the Zion of the Holy One of Israel. 15 Instead of your being forsaken and hated, with no passerby, I will make you into eternal pride, joy of generation and generation. 16 And you will suck the milk of nations, and you will suck the breast of kings, and you will know that I, the LORD, am your Savior and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob. 17 Instead of bronze I will bring gold, and instead of iron I will bring silver, and instead of wood bronze, and instead of stones iron. I will make your oversight peace and your taskmasters righteousness. 18 No longer will violence be heard in your land, devastation or destruction within your borders, and you will call your walls Salvation and your gates Praise. 19 No longer will the sun be your light by day, nor the brilliance of the moon shine for you. And the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God your glory. 20 Your sun will no longer set, nor your moon be gathered, for the LORD will be your eternal light, and the days of your mourning will be completed. 21 Your people will all be righteous; they will possess the land forever, a shoot planted by my hands, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified. 22 The smallest one will become a thousand, and the least a mighty nation. I, the LORD, will hasten it in its time.
