Chapter 6
1 After these things Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee of Tiberias. 2 A great crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on those who were sick. 3 But Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. 5 Therefore, having lifted up his eyes and having seen that a large crowd is coming toward him, Jesus says to Philip, “From where shall we buy bread that these may eat?” 6 But he said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was about to do. 7 Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of loaves do not suffice for them so that each might take a little something.” 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, 9 There is a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two small fish. But what are these for so many? 10 Jesus said, "Have the men recline." But there was much grass in the place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves and, giving thanks, distributed them to those who were reclining. He did the same with the small fish, as much as they wanted. 12 When they were filled, he said to his disciples, "Gather the leftover fragments so that nothing is destroyed." 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. 14 The men therefore, having seen the sign that he did, were saying, "This one is truly the prophet, the one coming into the world." 15 Therefore, when Jesus realized that they were about to come and seize him to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
