The Accuser's Challenge and Job's Calamities

Job 1:6-22

1
Chapter 1
6 And there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and the Adversary also came among them. 7 And the LORD said to the satan, "From where have you come?" And the satan answered the LORD and said, "From roaming in the earth and walking about in it." 8 And the LORD said to the satan, "Have you set your heart upon my servant Job? For there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil." 9 And the Satan answered the LORD and said, "Does Job fear God for nothing?" 10 Haven't you put a hedge about him and about his house and about all that he has, all around? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his livestock has broken out in the land. 11 But now, stretch out your hand and touch all that he has—if not, he will bless you to your face. 12 And the LORD said to the Adversary, "Behold, all that he has is in your hand; only do not stretch out your hand against him." And the Adversary went out from the presence of the LORD. 13 And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their firstborn brother. 14 A messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby." 15 And the Sheba attacked and took them and the boys they struck with the sword, and she escaped. Only I alone am left to tell you. 16 While this one was still speaking, another came and said, "Fire of God fell from the heavens and burned the sheep and the boys and consumed them, but I alone escaped to tell you." 17 While this one was still speaking, another came and said, "Chaldeans set three heads and they spread out upon the camels and took them and the boys they struck mouth of sword and I alone escaped to tell you." 18 While this one was still speaking, another came and said, "Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their firstborn brother's house." 19 And behold, a great wind came from beyond the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men and they died, and I alone escaped to tell you. 20 Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken. May the name of the LORD be blessed." 22 In all this Job did not sin and did not ascribe foolishness to God.
