Laws About Restitution

Exodus 22:1-15

22
Chapter 22
1 If a thief is caught breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there is no bloodguilt on the attacker. 2 If the sun has risen on him, he is guilty of bloodshed; he shall make full restitution. If he does not have it, then he shall be sold for his theft. 3 If you find the theft in his hand—from an ox to a donkey to a living sheep—he shall make twofold restitution. 4 If a man burns a field or vineyard and sends out his animal and it burns in another field, he shall make restitution from the best of his field and from the best of his vineyard. 5 If a fire breaks out and spreads to thorns, so that a stack of grain or standing grain or the field is consumed, the one who started the fire shall make full restitution; the burner shall make restitution for what was burned. 6 If a man gives his companion silver or utensils to keep, and a thief steals from the house of the man, if the thief is found he shall pay double. 7 If the thief is not found, the owner of the house shall come near to God to show whether he has put his hand into his neighbor's property. 8 For any matter of transgression, for an ox, for a donkey, for a sheep, for a garment, for any lost thing about which one says, "This is it," the matter of both of them shall come before the gods; he whom the gods condemn shall pay double to his companion. 9 For if a man gives to his companion a donkey or an ox or a sheep or any beast to keep, and it dies or is broken or is taken captive, there is no witness. 10 The oath of the LORD shall be between the two of them. If he did not put his hand into his neighbor's property, and its owner hears of it, he shall not make restitution. 11 If it was stolen from him, he shall make restitution to its owner. 12 If it is torn in pieces, he shall bring it as evidence—he shall bring the torn prey; he shall not make reconciliation. 13 If a man borrows an animal from his neighbor and it is injured or dies, the owner not being with it, he shall make full restitution. 14 If the owner is with it, he shall not make restitution. If it is a hired animal, it came with its hire. 15 And if a man seduces a virgin who has not been betrothed and lies with her, he shall surely pay a bride-price for her to be his wife.
