Gideon Refuses Kingship and Makes an Ephod

Judges 8:22-27

8
Chapter 8
22 The men of Israel said to Gideon, "Rule over us—you, your son, and your grandson too—for you saved us from the hand of Midian." 23 Gideon said to them, "I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you; the LORD will rule over you." 24 Gideon said to them, "I will make one request of you: give me an earring from their spoil, for they have golden earrings, because they are Ishmaelites." 25 They said, "Let's have it! Give it!" They spread out the garment, and every man threw a ring from his plunder onto it. 26 The weight of the golden earrings that he requested was 1,700 shekels of gold, besides the crescents and the pendants and the purple garments that were on the kings of Midian, and besides the neckbands that were on their camels' necks. 27 Gideon made it into an ephod and set it up in his city, at Ophrah. All Israel prostituted themselves after it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and to his house.
