Chapter 27
1 The daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher son of Gilead son of Machir son of Manasseh approached, to the clan of Manasseh son of Joseph. And these were the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 2 They stood before Moses, before Eleazar the priest, before the princes, and before all the congregation at the entrance of the tent of meeting, saying: 3 Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the midst of the assembly, the ones gathered against the LORD in the assembly of Korah, for in his sin he died and he had no sons. 4 Why should the name of our father be diminished from the midst of his family because he has no son? Give us a holding in the midst of the brothers of our father. 5 Moses brought the matter before the LORD. 6 The LORD said to Moses, 7 Yes, the daughters of Zelophehad have spoken rightly. You shall give them a possession of inheritance among their father's brothers, and you shall cause their father's inheritance to pass to them. 8 And to the sons of Israel you shall speak, saying, "If a man dies and he has no son, then you shall cause his inheritance to pass to his daughter." 9 And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brother. 10 And if he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father's brothers. 11 If his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his nearest kinsman from his family, and he shall possess it. And it shall be to the sons of Israel a statute of judgment, just as the LORD commanded Moses.
