Daniel's Prayer for Jerusalem

Daniel 9:1-19

9
Chapter 9
1 In the first year of Darius son of Ahasuerus, from the seed of Madai, who was made to reign over the kingdom of the Chaldeans. 2 In the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years of which the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet: seventy years for the fulfillment of the desolations of Jerusalem. 3 And I set my face to the Lord GOD to seek prayer and supplications with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. 4 And I prayed to the LORD my God and gave thanks and said: "Please, Lord, the great and fearsome God, keeper of the covenant and steadfast love to those who love him and to the keepers of his commandments." 5 We have sinned and transgressed, we have acted wickedly and rebelled, and turned away from your commandments and from your judgments. 6 And we did not listen to your servants the prophets who spoke in your name to our kings, our rulers, and our fathers and to all the people of the land. 7 To you, Lord, belongs the righteousness, and to us shame of face as at this day, to men of Judah and to dwellers of Jerusalem and to all Israel, the near ones and the far ones, in all the lands where you have scattered them because of their trespass against you. 8 To the LORD, to us shame of face, to our kings, to our officials, and to our fathers, who sinned against you. 9 To the Lord our God belong the mercies and the forgivenesses, for we have rebelled against him. 10 And we did not listen to the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in his Torahs which he gave before us by the hand of his servants the Prophets. 11 And all Israel have transgressed your Torah and turned aside, not to obey your voice, and you poured out on us the curse and the oath which is written in the Torah of Moses, servant of God, for we have sinned against him. 12 And he fulfilled his word, which he spoke against us and against our judges who judged us, to bring upon us great moral evil which was not done under all the heavens as it was done in Jerusalem. 13 As it is written in the Torah of Moses, all this evil has come upon us. Yet we have not entreated the face of the LORD our God to turn from our iniquity and to gain insight into your truth. 14 And the LORD kept watch over the evil and brought it upon us, for the LORD our God is righteous in all his deeds that he did, but we did not listen to his voice. 15 And now, Lord our God, who brought your people out from the land of Egypt with a strong hand and made for yourself a name as at this day, we have sinned, we have been wicked. 16 Lord, according to all your righteousness, please let your anger and your wrath turn away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain. For on account of our sins and the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and your people have become a reproach to all our surroundings. 17 And now, hear, our God, the prayer of your servant and his supplications, and shine your face upon your sanctuary, the desolate one, for the sake of my lord. 18 Incline your ear, my God, and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolations and the city upon which your name is called. For we do not cast down our supplications before you on the basis of our righteousness, but on the basis of your many compassions. 19 Lord, hear! Lord, forgive! Lord, give ear and act! Do not delay, for your sake, my God, for your name is called upon your city and upon your people.
