Chapter 5
1 After these things there was a festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 But there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Pool the one called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porticoes. 3 A multitude of the sick, blind, lame, and withered lay in these. 5 And a certain man was there who had been sick for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to become healthy?" 7 "Sir," the sick man answered, "I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up. While I am on my way, someone else goes down ahead of me." 8 Jesus says to him, "Rise, take up your mat, and walk." 9 Immediately the man was healed, and he picked up his mat and walked. But it was the Sabbath that day. 10 So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to carry your mat." 11 But he answered them, "The one who made me healthy said to me, 'Take up your pallet and walk.'" 12 So they asked him, "Who is the man who told you, 'Pick it up and walk'?" 13 But the one who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. 14 After these things Jesus finds him in the temple and said to him, "See, you have become healthy. Sin no more, so that something worse may not happen to you." 15 The man went away and told the Jews that Jesus was the one who had made him well.
