John 18:28-40

Chapter 18
28 They therefore led Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium; but it was early, and they did not enter into the Praetorium, so that they might not be defiled but might eat the Passover. 29 Therefore Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” 30 They answered him, "If this man were not doing evil, we would not have handed him over to you." 31 So Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not permitted for us to kill anyone.” 32 This was so that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he had spoken, signifying by what death he was about to die. 33 Pilate therefore entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, "Are you saying this on your own, or did others tell you about me?" 35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew myself? Your nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What did you do?” 36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my servants would be fighting so that I might not be handed over to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not from here.” 37 Pilate therefore said to him, “Are you not then a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, that I might bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.” 38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, “I find no charge in him.” 39 But there is a custom for you that I release one to you at the Passover. Do you wish, therefore, that I release to you the King of the Jews? 40 They shouted again, saying, "Not this one, but Barabbas." And Barabbas was a robber.
