Abram and Lot Separate

Genesis 13:1-18

Chapter 13
1 Abram went up from Egypt—he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him—to the Negev. 2 And Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold. 3 And he went on his journeys from the South to the house of God, the place where his tent had been at first between Bethel and Ai. 4 to the place of the altar which he had made there the first time, and he called on the LORD there. 5 Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had sheep, cattle, and tents. 6 And the land could not bear them dwelling together, for their property was much and they could not dwell together. 7 And there was a dispute between the shepherds of Abram's livestock and the shepherds of Lot's livestock, and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelt in the land at that time. 8 And Abram said to Lot, "Let there not be strife between you and me, between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are brothers." 9 Is not all the land before you? Please separate from me. If you go to the left, then I will go to the right, and if you go to the right, then I will go to the left. 10 Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the circle of the Jordan, for all of it was drinking before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah—like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt to Zoar. 11 And Lot chose for himself all the circle of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed from the east, and they separated, each man from his brother. 12 Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the Kikkar and pitched his tents as far as Sodom. 13 And the men of Sodom were evil and great sinners against the LORD. 14 And the LORD said to Abram after Lot had separated from him: "Lift up your eyes now and see, from the place where you are—north and south and east and west." 15 For all the land that you see I will give to you and to your seed forever. 16 And I will make your Seed like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can count the dust of the earth, then your Seed will be counted. 17 Rise, walk through the land, its length and its breadth, for I will give it to you. 18 And Abram journeyed on, came, and dwelt at the oaks of Mamre, which are at Hebron, and built there an altar to the LORD.
