The Trumpet Judgments: Plagues and Woes

Revelation 8:6-9:21

Chapter 8

⁶ And the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves so that they might trumpet. ⁷ And the first trumpeted, and there came hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was thrown to the earth. And the third of the earth was burned up, and the third of the trees was burned up, and all green grass was burned up. ⁸ And the second angel trumpeted; and something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea; and a third of the sea became blood, ⁹ and a third of the creatures—those in the sea, the ones having souls—died, and a third of the ships was destroyed. ¹⁰ And the third angel trumpeted; and a great star burning like a lamp fell from heaven, and it fell upon a third of the rivers and upon the springs of the waters. ¹¹ And the name of the star is called the Absinth. And the third of the waters became absinth, and many of the men died from the waters, because they were made bitter. ¹² And the fourth angel trumpeted; and the third of the sun was struck and the third of the moon and the third of the stars, so that the third of them might be darkened and the day not shine for the third of it, and the night likewise. ¹³ And I saw and heard an eagle flying in midheaven, saying with a loud voice: "Woe, woe, woe to the ones dwelling on the earth, because of the remaining trumpet calls of the three angels who are about to trumpet!"

Chapter 9

¹ The fifth angel trumpeted, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to earth. The key to the shaft of the abyss was given to him. ² He opened the shaft of the abyss, and smoke went up out of the shaft like the smoke of a great furnace. The sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the shaft. ³ Out of the smoke came locusts onto the earth, and authority was given to them as the scorpions of the earth have authority. ⁴ And they were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any green thing or any tree, except the people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. ⁵ and they were given permission not to kill them, but to torment them for five months; and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a human. ⁶ And in those days people will seek death but will by no means find it; they will desire to die, but death will flee from them. ⁷ And the likenesses of the locusts were similar to horses prepared for war, and on their heads were crowns similar to gold, and their faces were faces of humans, ⁸ and they had hair like the hair of women, and their teeth were like lions' teeth. ⁹ and they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots of many horses running into war. ¹⁰ And they have tails like scorpions, and stings; and in their tails is their authority to do wrong to humans for five months. ¹¹ They have a king over them, the angel of the abyss. He has a name in Hebrew, Abaddon, and in Greek he has the name Apollyon. ¹² The first woe has passed. Behold, two woes are still coming after this. ¹³ The sixth angel trumpeted, and I heard one voice from the horns of the golden altar before God. ¹⁴ saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, "Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates." ¹⁵ And the four angels who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year were released, so that they might kill a third of humanity. ¹⁶ The number of the cavalry armies was two hundred million; I heard their number. ¹⁷ In this way I saw the horses in the vision, and those sitting on them, having fiery, hyacinthine, and sulphurous breastplates. The heads of the horses were like lions' heads, and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and sulphur. ¹⁸ A third of the men were killed by the three plagues, by the fire and the smoke and the sulfur that came out of their mouths. ¹⁹ For the authority of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents, having heads, and with them they do wrong. ²⁰ The rest of humanity—those not killed by these plagues—did not repent of the works of their hands, so as not to worship demons and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood, which cannot see, hear, or walk. ²¹ And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.
