Cain and Abel

Genesis 4:1-26

Chapter 4
1 And Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and she said, "I have acquired a man with the LORD." 2 And she again gave birth to his brother Abel. And Abel was a shepherd of sheep, and Cain was serving the ground. 3 And it was at the end of days, and Cain brought an offering to the LORD from the fruit of the ground. 4 And Abel also brought from the firstborn of his flock and from their fat portions. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and on his offering. 5 And he did not look to Cain and to his offering, and it burned in Cain greatly, and his face fell. 6 And the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen?" 7 Is it not true that if you do well, there will be a lifting up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, and you will rule over it. 8 And Cain said to Abel his brother. And it was when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. 9 And the LORD said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" He said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?" 10 And he said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's bloods is crying out to me from the ground." 11 And now you are cursed from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. 12 For you will serve the ground, and it will not add to give its strength to you; you will be a wanderer and a fugitive in the land. 13 And he said to the LORD, "My iniquity is too great to bear." 14 Behold, you have driven me out today from the face of the ground, and from your face I will be hidden. I will be a wanderer and a fugitive in the earth, and everyone who finds me will kill me. 15 And the LORD said to him, "Therefore whoever kills Cain, sevenfold will be avenged." And the LORD set a sign for Cain so that no one who found him would strike him. 16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and dwelt in the land of Nod, east of Eden. 17 And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he was building a city and called the name of the city after the name of his son Enoch. 18 And Enoch fathered Irad, and Irad fathered Mehuiael, and Mehuiael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech. 19 Lamech took two wives for himself. The name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other was Zillah. 20 And Ada bore Jubal; he was the father of the tent-dweller and livestock. 21 And the name of his brother was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the lyre and the pipe. 22 And Zillah also bore Tubal-cain, forger of every craft of bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. 23 And Lamech said to his wives Ada and Zillah, "Hear my voice, wives of Lamech; listen! I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me." 24 If sevenfold for Cain, then for Lamech seventy-sevenfold. 25 Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son. She called his name Seth, for she said, "God has appointed me another seed in place of Abel, for Cain killed him." 26 And Seth also fathered a son, and he called his name Enosh. Then people began to call on the name of the LORD.
