Nicodemus and the New Birth

John 3:1-21

Chapter 3
1 Now there was a man from the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 He came to him by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, if anyone is not born from above, he cannot see the Kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus says to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Amen, amen, I say to you, if anyone is not born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” 6 That which has been begotten from the flesh is flesh, and that which has been begotten from the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, “It is necessary for you to be born from above.” 8 The Spirit blows where it wills, and you hear its voice, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who has been begotten from the Spirit. 9 Nicodemus answered him, “How can these things happen?” 10 Jesus answered him, “You are the teacher of Israel, and you do not know these things?” 11 Amen, amen, I say to you that what we know we speak and what we have seen we testify, and you do not accept our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 And no one has gone up into heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Humanity. 14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so it is necessary for the Son of Man to be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. 16 For God loved the world in this way: he gave his only begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. 17 For God did not send the Son into the world in order that he judge the world, but in order that the world be saved through him. 18 The one who believes in him is not judged; but the one who does not believe has already been judged, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and the people loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does evil hates the light and does not come to the light, so that his works may not be exposed. 21 But the one doing the truth comes to the light, in order that his works might be revealed, that they have been worked in God.
