Chapter 28
10 Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran. 11 He came to that place and stayed there because the sun had set. He took one of the stones of the place, put it at his head, and lay down in that place. 12 He dreamed, and behold, a ladder set up on the earth with its top reaching to the heavens, and behold, angels of God ascending and descending on it. 13 Behold, the LORD was standing over him, and he said, "I am the LORD, God of Abraham your father and God of Isaac. The land on which you are lying I will give to you and to your seed." 14 Your seed will be as the dust of the earth, and you will break through to the sea and eastward and northward and southward, and all the clans of the soil will be blessed in you and in your seed. 15 Behold, I am with you, and I will keep you in all places where you go, and I will bring you back to this land, for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you. 16 Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, "Truly, the LORD is in this place, and I did not know." 17 He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven." 18 Jacob arose early in the morning, took the stone that he had put under his head, and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. 19 He called that place House of God, but the name of the city was formerly Luz. 20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and keep me on this journey I'm taking, and give me bread to eat and clothes to wear..." 21 And I return in peace to my father's house, and the LORD will be my God. 22 And this stone, which I have set up as a pillar, will be the house of God, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.
