Genesis 2:4-25

Chapter 2
4 These are the generations of the heavens and the land when they were created, in the day of the LORD God making the land and the heavens. 5 And every shrub of the field before it was in the land and every plant of the field before it grew—for the LORD God had not caused rain to fall on the land and there was no man to work the ground. 6 And a mist would go up from the earth and water the whole face of the ground. 7 And the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground, and he blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living nephesh. 8 And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, eastward, and put there the man whom he had formed. 9 And the LORD God caused to grow out of the ground every tree desirable to the sight and good for food, and the tree of life in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10 And a river went out from Eden to water the garden, and from there it divides and becomes four heads. 11 The name of the first is Pishon. It is the one surrounding the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 And the gold of that land is good. There is bdellium and the shoham stone. 13 And the name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one surrounding all the land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is Hiddekel. It is the one that goes east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates. 15 And the LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to serve it and to keep it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "From every tree of the garden you shall surely eat." 17 and from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat from it, for in the day of your eating from it you shall surely die. 18 And the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make for him a helper corresponding to him." 19 And the LORD God formed from the ground every wild animal of the field and every bird of the heavens, and he brought them to the adam to see what he would call them. And whatever the adam would call it, a nepesh chayyah, that was its name. 20 And Adam called names to all the livestock, to the birds of the heavens, and to all the beasts of the field, but for Adam no helper corresponding to him was found. 21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept. And he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh beneath it. 22 And the LORD God built the rib which he had taken from the man into a woman, and he brought her to the man. 23 And Adam said, "This time bone from my bones and flesh from my flesh; this one shall be called woman, for from man this was taken." 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and cling to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and they were not ashamed.
