The Seventy Sent Out and Their Return

Luke 10:1-24

Chapter 10
1 After these things the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out two by two ahead of him to every city and place where he himself was about to go. 2 He said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore beg the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest." 3 Go! I am sending you as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 Do not carry a moneybag, do not carry a knapsack, do not wear sandals, and greet no one along the way. 5 And into whatever house you enter, first say, "Peace to this house." 6 And if there is a son of peace there, your peace will rest upon him; but if not, it will return upon you. 7 Stay in this house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer is worthy of his reward. Do not go from house to house. 8 And into whichever city you enter and they receive you, eat the things being set before you. 9 and heal the sick in it, and say to them, "The kingdom of God has drawn near to you." 10 But into whichever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say: 11 And the dust that clung to our feet from your city we wipe off from you. Nevertheless, know this, that the kingdom of God has come near. 12 I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom on that day than for that city. 13 Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the powers that happened in you had happened in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 Nevertheless, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the Judgment than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? Will you be brought down to Hades? 16 The one hearing you hears me, and the one rejecting you rejects me; but the one rejecting me rejects the one who sent me. 17 And the seventy-two returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name." 18 But he said to them, "I was beholding Satan as lightning falling from heaven." 19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will by no means harm you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but rejoice that your names are written in the heavens. 21 At that hour he exulted in the Holy Spirit and said: "I confess to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from wise and understanding ones, and you revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for in this way good pleasure came to be before you." 22 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 23 Turning to the disciples privately, he said, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see." 24 For I say to you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see and did not see it, and to hear what you hear and did not hear it.
