Righteousness by Faith and Israel's Unbelief

Romans 9:30-10:21

Chapter 9
30 What then shall we say? That the nations, which did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness—but righteousness from faith. 31 But Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not attain to the law. 32 Why? Because they pursued it not from faith but as from works. They stumbled at the stone of stumbling. 33 just as it is written: “Behold, I place in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, and the one who believes in him will not be put to shame.”

Chapter 10
1 Brothers, the good pleasure of my heart and my petition to God for them are for salvation. 2 For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For ignoring the righteousness of God and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. 5 For Moses writes that the righteousness from the Law—the man who does it will live in it. 6 But the righteousness from faith says in this way: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'—this is to bring Christ down." 7 Who will go down into the abyss? That is, to bring up Christ from the dead. 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart"—this is the word of faith which we proclaim. 9 That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, but with the mouth one confesses unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, "Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame." 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord of all is rich toward all who call on him. 13 For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. 14 How, then, will they call on the one they have not believed in? And how will they believe in the one they have not heard? And how will they hear without someone proclaiming? 15 How then will they proclaim unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who proclaim the good things." 16 But not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who believed our hearing?" 17 So then faith is from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. 18 But I say, did they not hear? Yes indeed! Their sound went out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the inhabited world. 19 But I say, did not Israel know? First Moses says, "I will make you jealous by a non-nation; by a senseless nation I will provoke you." 20 But Isaiah dares and says, "I was found among those not seeking me; I became manifest to those not asking for me." 21 But to Israel he says: "All day long I have spread out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people."
